An apparent engine failure caused the right side of American Airlines Flight 383 to catch fire on October 28, injuring 20 people.

The plane destined for Miami, FL reportedly caught fire as it was taking off from Chicago O’Hare International Airport. So far, eighteen people have filed a lawsuit against Boeing, General Electric, and American Airlines.

The plaintiffs allege that defective materials were used to construct the engine, and that employees from American Airlines acted negligently during the evacuation from the burning plane. A representative from General Electric could not be reached for comment, and a representative from Boeing declined to respond to requests for comment. However, a spokesperson from American Airlines released the following statement on November 15:

“We’re proud of our pilots, flight attendants and other team members who responded quickly to take care of our customers under very challenging circumstances. American is actively participating in the National Transportation Safety Board’s investigation and will continue to work with the NTSB and the other parties to the investigation of this event.”

The Twitter account Flight Alerts (@FlightAlerts777) posted a video on the day of the incident showing a massive cloud of smoke billowing from the burning plane as emergency vehicles arrived at the scene.
