Power Rogers, LLP attorneys Larry Rogers, Jr. and Jonathan Thomas secured a $16 million settlement with the City of Chicago for the estate of Bettie Jones, an innocent bystander who was shot and killed by a police officer in 2015.

“While no amount of money can ever compensate Bettie Jones’ family for the loss of their mother, we fought for and the City of Chicago has agreed to pay an amount that is fair when compared to local and national police-involved shooting cases,” Rogers, Jr. said in a statement. “This settlement respects who Bettie Jones was, that she died unjustifiably and it will allow the Jones family to begin with the healing process and move forward with their lives.”

Jones was shot and killed on December 26, 2015 after police were called to the home of Antonio LeGrier in response to a domestic incident between LeGrier and his son Quintonio LeGrier, who was home on winter break from Northern Illinois University. After Jones opened the door for Officer Robert Rialmo, Quintonio was alleged to have charged at the officer with a metal baseball bat. Officer Rialmo opened fire in response, killing both Quintonio and Jones.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the $16 million settlement was one of, if not the largest settlement agreements for a single person in the history of the City of Chicago.
