Thomas Siracusa Obtains Record Settlement

Thomas Siracusa recently obtained court approval for a $23,000,000.00 settlement on behalf of a 34 year-old woman who suffered a stroke following child birth. The settlement is an Illinois record for a birth-related injury to a mother, according to the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin.

The plaintiff developed a severe form of pre-eclampsia known as HELLP Syndrome during labor with her fourth child. She experienced periodic high blood pressures, which continued after delivery. In the medical malpractice lawsuit filed in 2011, Plaintiff alleged that her obstetrician failed to administer adequate anti-hypertensive medication and that staff nurses failed to follow hospital procedures to obtain the medical care the patient required. It was alleged that the high blood pressures caused the plaintiff to suffer a hemorrhagic stroke.

Plaintiff’s stroke caused catastrophic brain damage which has left her a quadriplegic. She remains ventilator-dependent and requires G-tube feedings.

“This settlement will enable the Plaintiff to obtain the medical care and therapy she now requires as a result of this tragic occurrence,” said Thomas Siracusa, a partner at Power Rogers.

Joseph Balesteri assisted with preparing the case for trial before the settlement was reached.
