Power Rogers Partner Thomas G. Siracusa recently secured a $7.5 million verdict in a medical negligence case brought on behalf of a woman who suffered a bladder injury after undergoing pelvic reconstruction surgery with implanted mesh.
Cook County court records show that the plaintiff sought treatment from the defendant physician for a history of kidney stones, stress urinary incontinence, and urinary tract infections. She was diagnosed with cervical prolapse and was recommended a mesh-based surgical prolapse repair in addition to a sling.
Following surgery, the plaintiff developed chronic pelvic pain which was attributed to mesh contracture. Physicians at the University of Illinois Medical Center re-operated to remove the mesh and perform a hysterectomy. The surgeons encountered intense inflammation from the implanted mesh and inadvertently caused a bladder injury. The plaintiff eventually required bladder reconstruction surgery.
In a lawsuit brought by Mr. Siracusa, it was alleged that the defendant performed an improper surgery using mesh and that the subsequent need for mesh removal and the conditions caused by the mesh led to the plaintiff’s bladder injury and resulting complications. The plaintiff continues to suffer from urinary frequency and incontinence, bladder infections, and spasms, and uses a catheter to flush and assist with emptying her bladder.
After a five-day trial in Cook County Circuit Court, the jury ruled in favor of the plaintiff, awarding a verdict amounting to $7,535,459.76.
