Power Rogers Tops the Chicago Lawyer Magazine's Annual Settlement Survey for the Fourth Consecutive Year
On October 1, 2013 Chicago Lawyer Magazine released the results of its 2013 Annual Settlement Survey. The Annual Survey is based on a compilation of the settlements reported to the Jury Verdict Reporter from July 2012 through June 2013 that equal or exceed $2 Million. The 2013 Settlement Survey included 107 settlements totaling $518 million. Of those, Power Rogers settled 15 cases in excess of $2 Million for a total annual settlement achievement of $115.69 Million on behalf of its clients. This number exceeded the next closest firm by more than $48 Million.
The largest settlement achieved in 2013 was handled by partners Joseph A. Power, Jr. and Devon C. Bruce. The case settled for $35 Million on behalf of a 7 year-old boy who suffers from severe cognitive deficits, cortical blindness, spastic quadriplegia and needs 24-hour care due to negligence at two different hospitals. At three months old, he suffered from subglottic stenosis that necessitated a tracheostomy due to being intubated with tubes that were too large. At 9 months old, he suffered from hypoxia-induced cardiac arrest and anoxic brain damage after a failure to monitor and timely suck secretions from his tracheostomy tube.
The second largest settlement achieved in 2013 was also handled by Joseph A. Power, Jr., along with Brian LaCien. That case, which settled for $23 Million, involved a 25-year old man who underwent bi-lateral above-the-knee amputations after both of his legs were crushed by a paper baler ram.
Partner Thomas G. Siracusa also handled one of the highest settlements of the year when he achieved $8 Million on behalf of his 55 year-old client who sustained fractures to his right tibia, left heel and a compression fracture when the hoist cables broke on the elevator he was riding in, which sent him plunging more than 20 feet.
Partners Thomas M. Power, Larry R. Rogers, Jr., Joseph W. Balesteri, Sean M. Houlihan and Carolyn Daley Scott also achieved multi-million dollar settlements on behalf of their clients that were featured in the Survey.
